One Computer
A computer lab is a location where all or most of your students can have their own machine. This is an ideal situation for following situations.
  • Introduce and teach new skills
  • Collect resources
  • Accelerate whatever process you are working with in your centers, groups or individual computers
A computer center is located in a classroom and would consist of a few computers that students could use during the day to improve skills and acquire information.
  • Independently practice the skills that were learned in the lab
  • Complete projects and assignments outside lab time
  • Groups working with Interactive/Simulation software

While a center allows students to work on the same assignment at different times during the day or week. Another method for deploying your computers in a classroom would be to assign a machine to each group or team. This would allow the machine to become a resource for the group as they work through a project. Team members could share the following responsibilities;
  • Project organization
  • Information acquisition
  • Problem Solving/Information Processing
  • Presentation of group projects

Much has been written about the one computer classroom. While not an ideal situation, you can accomplish many technology goals with one computer in your classroom. While we hope that you have access to both labs and small groups of machines in your classroom, we need to be aware of what can be accomplished with a one computer classroom.
  • Presentation Tool
  • Research Center
  • Groups working with Interactive/Simulation Software
  • Whole Class working with Interactive/Simulation Software
  • Whole Class Brainstorming/KWL Charts
  • Independently Practice the skills that were learned in the lab
